For those of you who may not have heard, a 27 year old woman, Meriam has been sentenced to 100 lashes for “adultery” and death by hanging for “apostasy”.
Meriam was born in Sudan, her father was Muslim and her mother Christian. According to Meriam, her father was barely around during her childhood so she was brought up as an Orthodox Christian by her mother.
Meriam fell in love and married a Christian man. Authorities were informed by a family member and she was arrested. This is because according to Shari’a law as practiced in Sudan it is forbidden for a Muslim woman to marry a Christian man (please note that it is perfectly acceptable for a Muslim man to marry a Christian woman… got to love the disgusting double standards).
Because the authorities claim she was “born a Muslim” her marriage to a Christian means she has committed adultery (seriously I am not making this lunacy up!!) Again please note in Sudan the children must be raised in the FATHER’S religion and they do not want children raised as Christian.
When Meriam protested that she was Christian and NOT Muslim she was then charged with apostasy (renouncing her Muslim faith) which (barbarically) is punishable by death.
May 11 Meriam was convicted of both charges, given 3 days to recant her faith or die. She refused.
Now she has been sentenced to 100 lashes and death.
This 27 year old woman, who followed the faith her mother taught her, who fell in love and has a 20month old toddler and is pregnant with another child is going to die because of some twisted ideas about religion.
Religion – Any Religion – should not come before human rights, religion should not be used as a weapon to punish, control or torture people.
All people should be free to follow their faith.
However my PERSONAL belief is a faith that causes harm, destroys, kills, tortures, oppresses is not really a faith – it is cruelty and ignorance and usually driven by the need to oppress.
I have Muslim friends they are the most caring and peaceful people. I have read stories about the riots in Egypt where Muslims formed protective rings around Christians when they were praying and that Christians then formed a protective barrier in from of Mosques to protect those praying inside.
There are people from all religions who are good and kind and compassionate. Just as there are many people from all religions who are ignorant and cruel and will use their religion as a weapon for control and power over others.
This is not about Muslims, this is about a woman who is going to die.
Faith should life your heart, it should be another aspect of love and compassion and kindness.
Please stand against this cruelty and ignorance. Please support our sister Meriam, call on the authorities in Sudan to stop the execution.
